Student Treatment Advocacy Resources Team (START)

Supporting Student Well-Being Where It Matters Most

At the National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP), we believe that early identification and intervention are vital when a child or youth begins to face emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges, whether at school, at home, or in the community. While family is central to a young person’s development, school is also a key environment for growth, learning, and connection. That’s why we created our Student Treatment Advocacy Resources Team (START) - a school-based mental health program designed to provide students with flexible, consistent access to therapeutic support.

What We Offer

Our school-based treatment services bridge the gap between academic success and emotional well-being. By embedding our clinicians within schools, we work with school employees and families to deliver comprehensive, trauma-forward care that strengthens students’ mental health and ability to thrive within the school environment. Our services include, but are not limited to:

  • Individual & group therapy

  • Crisis intervention

  • On-site & in-home services, as needed

  • One-on-one classroom behavioral support

  • Collaboration with school employees & families to meet each student’s unique needs

  • Case management

Who START Serves

START is available to children and youth enrolled in public and private schools from Pre-K through 12th grade, as well as young adults completing alternative education programs. Our school-based program helps students and families who are navigating challenges in school, at home, or in the broader community.

Flexible, Individualized Care

The length of our services varies depending on each student’s needs and treatment goals. Some students meet their goals within six months, while others benefit from longer-term support. Our school-based team meets youth and families where they are to help them identify strengths and overcome challenges.

Why START Stands Out

Unlike many other school-based mental health programs, our START clinicians are full-time professionals based out of the schools we serve. This allows our therapists to build consistent, trusted relationships with students, families, and educators.

Our support extends beyond the classroom, providing services during the school day, in students’ homes, and throughout the community, even during scheduled school breaks. Our services are reimbursed through Medicaid, private insurance, or self-pay, ensuring there is no cost to the school.

How To Get Started

Our START clinicians are currently based in select partner schools. If you would like to refer your child or a student from your school, or if you are interested in establishing a school partnership, please reach out to our team. We would love to discuss how START can benefit your school community.
