Becoming an Adoptive Parent

Adoptive parents have different stories and strengths. What matters most is your ability to provide a safe, stable, and loving home for a child or youth.
To be considered, prospective adoptive parents:
MUST be at least 18 years old
MUST be able to meet the requirements of NYAP
May be single or married
May be a co-parent
May be a renter or own their home
Become an Adoptive Parent
Your journey to become an adoptive parent begins with state-required training and a home study process. These steps prepare you and ensure your home is safe and ready to welcome a child or youth. The process includes, but is not limited to:
Completing an application
Background checks on all adult household members
Medical exams
Interviews of all household members
A safety check of the home
Readiness assessment for adoption
Training
Moving Forward with Adoption
Once you are approved, we work to facilitate an adoption that is the best possible fit for both your family and the child or youth.
We provide you with information about children and youth who are in need of an adoptive family
We work with you to identify a child or youth who is a good match for your family based on your home study and your stated needs and preferences
Once approved by the primary family or custodial agency and the child or youth, as applicable, we collaborate with all involved parties to ensure the proposed adoption is in the best interest of the child or youth
Complete pre-placement visits, as applicable
Proceed with the proposed adoptive placement upon final approval by all involved parties
