NYAP’s foster care services provide trauma-responsive support that recognizes the unique needs of each youth and their family.

Louisiana Foster Parent Requirements
Louisiana foster parents come from diverse backgrounds but share the commitment to providing nurturing, temporary homes. NYAP welcomes applicants who meet Louisiana's requirements:
At least 21 years old
Have a high school diploma or equivalent
Able to dedicate time and energy to each youth’s growth and well-being
In good physical and mental health
Financially stable without foster care payments
Able to provide living space that ensures each youth’s privacy and comfort
Willing to complete comprehensive background checks
Free from disqualifying history with Child Protective Services
Committed to preservice training and ongoing education
Ready to collaborate with NYAP's multidisciplinary team

Yes. Many of our foster parents care for multiple youth or sibling groups. Keeping siblings together can help reduce the trauma of separation, preserve important family connections, and support more successful outcomes. Older siblings also often provide comfort and reassurance to younger siblings, having already taken on caregiving roles within their families. During the home study process, NYAP’s team will answer any questions and ensure your home can comfortably accommodate each youth and provide the appropriate space and privacy.

At NYAP, we understand that fostering a teenager is different from caring for a younger child. Many teens experiencing foster care remain deeply connected to their families, even when they cannot safely live at home. They benefit from caring, consistent adults who can provide stability, guidance, and support as they navigate adolescence and prepare for adulthood.
Our Louisiana team provides foster parents with specialized training in adolescent development, trauma-responsive care, and strategies for supporting older youth. Yes. Many of our foster parents work. The specific considerations will depend on the age and needs of the youth in your care. During the home study process, your NYAP team will discuss your work schedule, help you explore childcare options, and ensure you have a plan for appointments, emergencies, and other situations that may arise once you open your home to youth.
