When School Starts, So Does the Need for Foster Families
Every year, August and September bring a noticeable increase in the number of youth entering foster care. As school starts back up, educators and school employees begin to recognize signs of abuse or neglect that may have gone unnoticed during summer break. Some students arrive hungry, fatigued, withdrawn, or with visible injuries, while others may share fears about returning home.
The need for foster homes is urgent year-round, but it becomes even more critical during these months. Youth need stability, compassion, and safety from caring individuals like you in their communities.
We understand that becoming a foster parent is a big step. That’s why we walk alongside foster families, providing training, high-quality support, and a strong community of care throughout their fostering journey. Our approach is trauma-forward and family-centered because we believe lasting healing happens through connection.
We provide:
Individualized training tailored to your family’s strengths
24/7 emergency support
Financial assistance for youth in your care
Respite care and kinship care services
Transitional and long-term programs, including care for teen parents, sibling groups, unaccompanied children and youth, and survivors of human trafficking
And our support doesn’t end there. NYAP offers community-based programs across the nation, always focusing on the unique needs of each individual and family. Our goal is to support reunification whenever possible and ensure that every youth has the opportunity to thrive in a safe, supportive environment.
If you’ve ever considered whether fostering could be part of your story, now is the time to explore that possibility. By taking the first step today, you’ll be prepared when a young person needs you most.
