Foster Care in Illinois

Building Brighter Futures Together

For nearly three decades, the National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP) has been a trusted partner of Illinois’ foster care system. With offices strategically located in the Chicago area and the middle of the state, our Illinois team delivers personalized, community-based support to children, youth, and families throughout the state.

Illinois' Approach to Foster Care

We believe foster parents are essential partners in a child or youth's success. In Illinois, this means foster parents are more than caregivers; they are valued members of the treatment team.

Foster parents play an active role in helping children and youth overcome trauma and build resilience. They also serve as mentors for primary families whenever possible, building trust and enhancing the chances of successful reunification. The bonds they create can last far beyond the time a child or youth spends in their care.

Our approach centers on unconditional commitment, meaning we never give up on the children, youth, and families we serve. We believe in their capacity to heal, adapt, and succeed, no matter the challenges they've faced.

  • Maintaining connections with family members whenever possible is the core of effective foster care services. Even when circumstances prevent children and youth from living safely at home, preserving relationships with parents, siblings, and extended family minimizes the trauma of separation and increases the likelihood of successful reunification or healthy transitions to adulthood.

  • The length of time varies significantly based on individual circumstances. Some children and youth return home within months, while others may remain in care for a year or more. Illinois prioritizes reunification when safe and possible, but some youth remain in care until they age out or find alternative permanency options.
