Behavioral Stabilization Support and Placement Services (BSSPS)

NYAP provides on-site Behavioral Stabilization Support and Placement Services to youth with complex mental health and behavioral challenges awaiting placement in kinship, foster, or congregate care.

Services 

Services are treatment-focused, encourage the emotional and social development of youth, and are designed to provide a comprehensive, trauma-informed assessment to guide the appropriate level of care placement and crisis intervention services, including de-escalation, safety planning, and self-management skills.

Services may be provided at the child welfare office or a NYAP office and include:

  • De-escalation

  • Safety planning

  • Evidence-informed and evidence-based interventions

  • One-hour response time

  • Licensed clinicians

  • Available 24/7, 365 days a year

Based on funder preference, services may also include:

  • Kinship services, including family finding, referral, and aftercare

  • Basic care, including personal care supplies and places to eat, shower, relax, and sleep for short periods (if services are provided at a NYAP location)

  • Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) assessment

  • Emergency foster homes for short-term placement

  • Post-placement stabilization services 

When should I make a referral? 

Referrals can be made any time before or immediately after a youth is placed, including while residing in their home, a kinship home, a foster home, or prior to step down from a congregate care setting.


Average Length

Services are generally completed within 24 – 48 hours.

Who is eligible?

Must be in the custody of a child welfare entity

Are ages 4 to 18

Referrals can be made by anyone on the youth's treatment team or child welfare employees
